Gateway to the old world

Everyone thinks my trips are relaxing vacations to exotic places, and while it is certainly true that I try to enjoy assimilating into a place I visit, my days start around 4 AM out early to catch that magical light. This is followed by afternoons filled exploring the back roads looking for that special location, evenings trying to shoot again, a late dinner, maybe a glass or two of wine and I fall in bed to start again tomorrow. I spent several weeks, during May, living in a little villa tucked in small vineyard in the heart of Tuscany. After my early mornings and a bit of breakfast, I often went for a long walk across the countryside, usually joined by a small dog that belonged to the house down the road. I enjoyed the views, the morning air and the serenity of being in Italy as my little four legged friend came along exploring the roadside with all its wonderful smells and sounds.
It was on one of these mornings that I came across this gate. It was something out of the Godfather. I studied it trying to figure out how and when I might shoot it, maybe I shouldn’t use that term. As I intently viewed the scene, moving back and forth honing in on the composition, a large black Mercedes with tinted windows came down the drive. I am not sure who it was, but it was time to walk on. I called to my little friend and was glad to make it over the next rise in the road.
